What Is PTSD?

Post-traumatic stress disorder refers to the lasting psychological responses one experiences after a traumatic event. This serious condition impacts men and women of all ages and backgrounds, making it one of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders.

Any number of harmful or life-threatening events can lead to PTSD, including exposure to military combat, domestic violence, sexual assault, and more. After the event, survivors struggle with intrusive thoughts or may relive their experiences through nightmares and flashbacks.

Different Types of Trauma Responses

Witnessing a traumatic event does not always lead to a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder. It’s possible to experience a response shortly after a traumatic event, though it doesn’t last for more than three weeks. This is known as acute stress disorder, which has the potential to develop into post-traumatic stress disorder.

If you develop psychological responses at least six months after a traumatic event, this is delayed-onset PTSD. Ongoing exposure to trauma rather than one-time events elicits reactions known as complex trauma. Any symptoms lasting more than three months classify as chronic PTSD.

Common Symptoms of PTSD

The symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder fall into the following four categories:

  • Intrusion: Living with unwanted intrusive thoughts like vivid flashbacks of a traumatic event
  • Avoidance: Actively avoiding any people, places, or reminders of an event
  • Changes in mood and cognition: Feeling guilt and shame instead of positive emotions and having less interest in activities you once enjoyed
  • Changes in reactivity: Having trouble sleeping or concentrating and experiencing heightened emotions such as angry outbursts

How We Treat PTSD

While certain antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications can provide some symptom relief, psychotherapy remains the preferred treatment method. Our facility offers cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that focuses specifically on trauma so you can identify certain stressors and heal on an internal level. Group and family therapy options are also available depending on your experiences and needs.

If you have PTSD and other mental health issues, such as anxiety disorders or substance abuse, joint programs can target all destructive behaviors and teach you how to address them.
